ABYS ry is a Finnish cat club which is devoted to the promotion, protection and preservation of the Abyssinian and Somali breed. The club was founded in year 1968 and its goal has been ever since to support Aby and Somali cat owners and breeders. In 1968 the abyssinian cat fanciers of SUROK (Suomen Rotukissayhdistys, the first Finnish cat club) founded their own breed section, which published a newsletter, gave information on available kittens and organized various programmes for their members. During the following years the cat fancy in Finland increased and many new cat clubs were founded and therefore, in 1988, the section became an independent breed club, Abessinialais-somaliyhdistys, to connect fanciers of the abyssinian and somali cats from all over Finland. In 1994 the present name, Aby- ja Somalikissat ABYS became official. AbyS today The club publishes its newsletter AbyS-lehti 4 times a year. It tells the latest news on our cats, like newborn litters and available studs as well as show results. The newsletter also includes interesting articles on abyssinians and somalis and their breeders. The members are welcome to contribute with their own material. The club has a working agreement with Suomen Kissaliitto (SRK), which sends us information concerning our own breeds. Our representative has the right to speak on our behalf in the general assembly of SRK on matters concerning abys and somalis. SRK also publishes information on the club in their magazine Kissa-lehti. We keep lists on expected and born litters and we also keep a telephone service to inform prospective buyers of kittens and to help new cat owners with any problems they might encounter. We organize yearly check-ups on PRA by a vet specialized in eye diseases (all Finnish aby and somali breeding queens and studs have to be checked for PRA) and we keep records of all the examined cats. PRA has not been found in young examined cats for many years now. All club cats who achieve titles in cat shows are rewarded with the club rosette. During the spring meeting we also give prizes to the best club cats of the year as well as the most successful breeder of the year. During most cat shows we keep an information desk where we give information on abys and somalis and have the latest list on newborn kittens. When possible we arrange presentation shows or bazaars and other entertainment for the members, like Christmas parties or summer happenings.
